20 April 2010

This is my 100th blog post, BTW.

Today instead of clinical, I had class from 10-12. Two thirds of the class went home at noon, while my clinical group had to stay late to run some simulations in the sim lab. How delightfully unfair, yes? (We also have clinical tomorrow while the rest of the class has the day off. Boo.)

I have a love/hate relationship with the sim lab. It really is a good learning experience and I've never been in a simulation that I wasn't able to take something from, but it makes me anxious. My neck changes colors and I feel like I freeze up when the simulation starts. It's stressful, especially because it's video taped from several different angles and in the debriefing session that follows you have to watch yourself and talk about what you could've done better, what you did well, etc.

And every single time I'm in a simulation and we watch the video afterwards, I ALWAYS find myself sitting there thinking....

...Is that REALLY what my hair looks like in the back?!

Jesus.

18 April 2010

Oh hi there.

Um, so... it's been a good month since I last blogged (well, here, anyway.)

School has just been nuts since this rotation started. Pediatrics has really grown on me (to clarify, I thought I would love it, kind of actually hated it at first, and have now grown to really enjoy it after getting the hang of it. Whew.) Included in the month of April alone: 5 tests, 1 presentation, and 1 project. Are you frickin kidding me? It probably goes without saying that I've been crazy busy with school while simultaneously managing to maintain my relationships.

The good news is that I only have two more 0430 wake up calls left and that I don't have to do any clinical prep work EVER again! Jesus. It's been a long year and a half, but before long I'll be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

ALSO, THE BEST NEWS EVER:

I have the entire summer off from school. WHOA. I should qualify that by saying that I have to take a lit class, but it's online and therefore doesn't count. Woot. With the exception of this past Christmas, I haven't had any real time off since I started nursing school. Anyway, from May 5th until August 23rd I've got a break.

Conveniently, since our peds final (our LAST final of all the intermediate level nursing rotations is on Cinco de Mayo, I propose tequila shots in the parking deck when shit's over.

Who's with me?

P.S.

Also.

My neighbor committed suicide today.

We didn't have a relationship with him, but :(

Dear Blog Readers, (all 2 of you)

Sometimes I think that this blog needs a theme or a direction to breathe new life into it. Maybe I'd write more and about more meaningful topics if I had a purpose in blogging, other than sharing tidbits of my life with the virtual world.

I don't cook much.

I don't have my own place to decorate.

As much as I love clothes, shoes, handbags, and jewelry, my daily wardrobe mostly consists of jeans and old t-shirts. I'm probably not the person to ask for fashion advice.

I'm not married. Is it just me, or is there a staggering number of "married folk" blogs? Like "hey, I just got married, read about my life!" Or, "hey, I'm planning a wedding, look at everything we registered for!" No, no. The thought of getting married right now makes me break out in hives.

I'm not crafty.

So, I don't know. These days I don't have the energy to be passionate about much other than becoming a skilled clinician, and let's be honest -- that's not interesting to anyone else. I guess that puts me back where I started -- writing blog letters (aka yelling into a cave) and waiting to see what happens next.

XOXO,
Blogging up a storm,

Dear Amanda,

This past Sunday I was driving back to Charlotte after a lovely weekend in Raleigh with Ken. I had been looking forward to the drive only because of the time change and the extra daylight. The truth is, I was tired of driving back and forth -- three weekends in a row. I was itching to get home, because Monday brought the end of spring break and the beginning of a new rotation, which I felt I needed to prepare for. Anyway.

After three weekends of driving from Charlotte to Raleigh and back again, I had pretty well exhausted the cross-section of my CD collection that lives in my car. (I know, I'm old school. CDs are just easier for me when driving. My iPod is easier for me at the gym.) Approaching the last 45 minutes or so of my two and a half hour drive, I popped in a CD I hadn't listened to in maybe a year or more, and I got lost in a wave of nostalgia almost immediately. It was Kate Voegele's Don't Look Away. Specifically, I landed on the title track.

At first, I thought that the album reminded me of how much I miss Wilmington. I was in Wilmington when I bought it, the spring before I left. I know it was in the spring because I bought a beach chair from Wal Mart the same day. My mom was in town visiting my grandfather (and me.)

Yeah, at first I thought it reminded me of how much I miss Wilmington, but that wasn't it. It reminded me of a part of my life that doesn't exist anymore and can't possibly exist ever again, but that I miss very much. I miss the people there the most, but I also miss little things -- like the way my apartment smelled on the day I moved in. And Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn. I miss Wednesday night dinner dates with my grandfather and taking long walks on Wrightsville Beach all by myself. I miss Sunday lunches with my extended family, when my grandmother was still alive and before Emily and Franklin left for college. Like I said, I miss the people the most.

There's even a part of me that misses passing out in Davis' bed -- perhaps the most platonic relationship I've ever had with a boy. And I certainly miss gossiping with you.

Yes, there are a lot of things I miss about Wilmington and about my former life there. But I've grown a lot since I left, and I'm lucky to have people there still who I love, so I'll always be coming back.

"It's only life."

XOXO,
Kitty

Dear Blogland,

I am sick sick sick of everything in my closet these days. I find myself wearing the SAME three or four t-shirts all the time because they're comfy and I'm just tired of 98% of my clothes. Ugh. I got off track with my new healthy lifestyle a few weeks ago (when I got sick for the THIRD time this cold/flu season despite receiving both flu vaccines and obsessively hand-sanitizing), so I'm not feeling great about how I look in general. I am pale, fluffy, and can't seem to get myself out of t-shirts and Birkenstocks. Bleh. I also sort of need a haircut, but my hairdresser gave birth to a giant baby (no, seriously) last week.

I think it's just the time of year. The weather has gotten to me more than ever this winter. So much rain and snow -- I miss the sunshine. It's late winter, I've been ready for spring since January, and as a result I just don't feel awesome.

Despite these negative things, DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME is this weekend and I couldn't be happier. I love it when the days finally get longer and miserable winter becomes a distant memory. The extra daylight puts me in such a fantastic mood, which is extra wonderful seeing as how I've got to start a new rotation on Monday (peds nursing, fyi) so it helps that I'll be in a good mood that day even though spring break is over.

Also, this is the first time in YEARS that I have managed to stay away from tanning beds all winter. I started doing this when I was in high school, and even though it's horrible for you -- there is just nothing like a tanning bed nap in winter. I would rather tan than drink Tito's vodka (and I love Tito's vodka.) I would rather tan than smoke a joint on Trip's roof (I should qualify this by noting that it's been months and months and months since I did anything of the sort.) I would rather tan than do a lot of things, but I've stayed away from it this year in an effort to make healthier decisions. Also, we talked about skin cancer in my second rotation of the fall semester and I was pretty much scared straight after that.

I've been drinking too much hot chocolate lately.

Sincerely,
Catherine Burris, Age 22

Dear Amanda/Caitlin,

In case it's not already perfectly clear via Facebook, I was able to take my final exam on Wednesday as planned and peace out for Orlando on Friday as planned. We enjoyed a lovely Disney vacation, and although I wish the weather had been a tad warmer, it was a delightful break from the frigid North Carolina temperatures. I'm more ready for spring than ever.

Is everyone on spring break right now? Apparently App State is because I saw my neighbor, who currently attends ASU, out running today. I think UNCW is as well? I don't know. I love spring break. I want to do something fun this week (Lazy 5 Ranch, maybe?) but I'm short on cash, so we'll see.

I briefly tried ChatRoulette today, out of curiosity. The first random stranger I was partnered with was a man in his 40s who asked me if I was willing to take my clothes off. Curiosity satisfied - I'm done.

I want Evan Lysacek to be straight SO BADLY but when he tweets about how much he adores Vera Wang (I know, she designs his costumes) it just gets harder and harder to believe that he's interested in what I got. Maybe he's not my future ex-husband after all.

OKAY BYE.
